I'm SO excited for the upcoming Watermelon Festival! It's their 63rd annual festival and trust me, you don't want to miss it! There are TONS of incredible events and things to do at the festival inclusing the street dance with live music, parade, pageants, watermelon and poster auction, treasure hunt, watermelon eating contest, seed-spitting contest, bicycle/tricycle races, a 5K run that benefits St. Jude, TONS of arts/crafts/food vendors, and pickleball, golf, and fishing tournaments!
This event is hosted by the Farmerville Jaycees, and it's truly an incredible celebration of Louisiana agriculture, community, and family traditions. Thousands of people come this festival every year because of how amazing it is! This festival is special because all of the watermelons are grown right here in Louisiana by local farmers, and we get to see the watermelons at the auction, eat them at the eating contest and throughout the festival, and spit the seeds during the seed spitting contest. Last year, I was 4th in the seed-spitting contest, and this year, I am going to place this time, I just know it. The parade is absolutely HUGE and literally everybody comes out for it; the best throws last year (in my opinion) were the popsicles lol! I loved seeing the classic car show too! The food vendors are unparalleled, so be sure you show up with a huge appetite so you can try every place. But the most special part of the Watermelon Festival is the community spirit and love for Louisiana vibe.💜
There a NEW event this year and it's the Slice and Smash Pickleball Tournament! There's cash prizes for the winners and it will be held the Saturday before the festival so never fear, you CAN do both and enjoy your time! The tournament is Saturday July 18th at 2 PM
Fun fact: did you know that there's TWO Watermelon Festival Pageants? The first one is for age divisions 0-17 years and the second pageant is a local preliminary to Miss Louisiana and Miss Louisiana's Teen. The first pageant will be held on Sunday July 19th at 2 PM and the second pageant will be Saturday July 25th at 6 PM. Both are at the Willy Davis Rec Center in Farmerville, and I'd LOVE to see you at both of them!
There's a super special museum exibit celebrating 63 years of Louisiana Watermelon Festival history. It features historic photos, clothing, pageant memorabilia, posters, documents, trophies, and artifacts from throughout the years.
The street dance this year will have Coyote Pine, RJ & Kreisler Smoove, and Mike McKenzie Band performing live for everyone to enjoy! The street dance is sponsored by Ouachita Valley federal Credit Union. Oh and don't forget, it's a free event!
There is something for everybody, whether its family activities and music, shopping and pageantry, contests and tournaments, or simply fresh, local, Louisiana watermelon, you'll find something everyone in the family enjoys! Best of all, admission to the festival is completely free.
